Tonkinese

The modern Tonkinese was born in the 1960s in Canada, although crosses between Siamese and Burmese had existed long before. Canadian breeder Margaret Conroy was the first to recognize the potential of these crosses as an independent breed and worked systematically to establish a standard. The name Tonkinese was chosen as a reference to the Gulf of Tonkin in Southeast Asia, the region of origin of the parent breeds.

The Tonkinese inherits its roots from both parent breeds. The modern Burmese descends from a single cat named Wong Mau imported to the United States in 1930. When Dr. Joseph Thompson studied Wong Mau's genetics, he discovered that she was actually a natural cross between Siamese and Burmese, which makes the Tonkinese a kind of return to the genetic origins of the pure Burmese.

The breed was recognized by the Canadian Cat Association (CCA) in 1971, being the first feline association to grant it official status. TICA and the CFA took longer to recognize it due to debates about the heterozygosity of the breed. Today the Tonkinese is appreciated worldwide for its exceptional longevity and balanced character.

The Tonkinese is a medium-sized cat with a body more compact than the Siamese but slimmer than the Burmese: it represents an elegant midpoint between its two parent breeds. The head is of a gently wedge-shaped form, with slightly marked cheekbones. The eyes are its most distinctive feature: almond-shaped and of a unique aquamarine color, the result of the genetic combination of the blue eyes of the Siamese and the yellow eyes of the Burmese.

The Tonkinese coat can show three patterns: mink (the most typical, with a soft contrast between body and points), solid (without visible contrast) and colorpoint (with strong contrast like the Siamese). The mink pattern is the most valued. The coat is always short, very smooth and with an unmistakable silky shine.

As for temperament, the Tonkinese brings together the best of its two parent breeds: the sociability and love for people of the Burmese combined with the sharp intelligence and communicativeness of the Siamese. It is a very vocal cat but with a less shrill voice than the Siamese, more musical and varied. It is playful, curious and active, but also knows when to curl up quietly next to its guardian.

Caring for the Tonkinese is simple thanks to its short, shiny coat. A weekly rub with a rubber glove or damp cloth is enough to remove dead hair and maintain the silky shine of its coat. Shedding is minimal compared to long-haired breeds. A bath is rarely necessary.

The Tonkinese needs daily physical and mental stimulation. It loves interactive play, especially wand toys, food puzzles and simulated hunting games. It is a cat that enjoys heights, so tall scratching trees and spaces where it can explore and observe its environment are fundamental elements for its well-being. It does not tolerate long periods of solitude.

The diet should be high quality and rich in animal proteins, adapted to its active metabolism. Access to fresh water is essential to support kidney health. It is recommended to combine wet and dry food to ensure adequate hydration. Regular veterinary check-ups allow early detection of any genetic alterations inherited from the parent breeds.

The Tonkinese may inherit predispositions from its parent breeds. From the Siamese it may inherit the tendency towards hepatic amyloidosis, the deposition of amyloid proteins in the liver that can progress to liver failure. From the Burmese it may inherit the predisposition to familial hypokalemia, muscular weakness caused by low potassium levels in the blood. In both cases, genetic tests are available.

In general, the Tonkinese is a considerably more robust and long-lived breed than its parent breeds, with a life expectancy that can exceed 18 years in optimal conditions.
