Birman

The origin of the Birman is wrapped in a fascinating legend. According to tradition, the breed was born in the sacred temples of Burma (today Myanmar), where cats were the spiritual guardians of the priests. When the temple of Lao-Tsun was attacked and the high priest Mun-Ha died during the assault, his cat Sinh climbed on his body and stared at the golden statue of the goddess Tsun-Kyan-Kse. At that moment, his coat turned golden, his eyes acquired the deep sapphire blue, and his paws touching the priest turned white as a symbol of purity.

Historically, it is believed that the breed arrived in France in the early 20th century, possibly as a gift to a European military officer who had helped protect the Burmese temples. In France, the breed was developed and officially recognized in 1925. However, during World War II the breed almost disappeared, with only two specimens remaining in Europe that served as the basis for the recovery of the modern Birman.

Today, the Birman is one of the most appreciated breeds in the feline world, valued both for its beauty and its balanced character. Its white gloves, which must end in chevron shape on the hind paws, are the most characteristic and unique trait of the breed.

The Birman is a medium-large sized cat, with a strong, elongated and well-muscled body. The head is rounded and broad, with full cheekbones. Its eyes are one of its most beautiful features: large, oval and of a deep and intense blue, with a sweet and dreamy expression. The coat is semi-long, silky and shiny, without the dense undercoat of other long-haired breeds, meaning that tangles rarely form.

The color pattern is the colorpoint: cream or pale golden body with darker points on the face, ears, paws and tail. What makes the Birman unique are its four gloves: symmetrical white patches on all paws, which on the hind paws must end in an upward point forming the so-called lace or chevron.

In terms of temperament, the Birman is a serene, affectionate and very balanced cat. It is not as active as the Abyssinian nor as reserved as the Persian: it occupies a middle ground that makes it very adaptable to different lifestyles. It is sociable with visitors, tolerant with children and generally accepts living alongside other cats and dogs.

The care of the Birman's coat is surprisingly simple for a semi-long haired breed. The lack of a dense undercoat means the coat rarely tangles, so brushing two to three times a week is sufficient to keep it shiny and free of knots. During shedding season, the frequency can be increased to control the amount of loose hair.

The Birman is a moderately active cat that enjoys play but also quiet rest periods. It likes interactive toys, scratching posts and heights from which it can observe its surroundings. It is not a cat that requires a large space, but it does need regular attention and company.

The diet should be of high quality, rich in animal proteins and balanced in fats and carbohydrates. Access to fresh and plentiful water is essential, especially if the diet is mainly based on dry food, to support the kidney health typical of this breed.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the most common disease in the Birman. This condition, which involves the thickening of the heart walls, can be asymptomatic for years and then manifest suddenly. It is recommended to perform annual echocardiograms from two years of age for early detection.

The Birman can also be prone to some forms of kidney disease, including renal dysplasia in some lines. Maintaining good hydration, whether through a wet diet or water sources attractive to the cat, is an important preventive measure. Regular veterinary check-ups with blood and urine tests allow detecting any alteration early.
