West Highland White Terrier
Features

Origins
The West Highland White Terrier originated in the Scottish Highlands, where it was bred to hunt rodents, foxes and badgers in the rugged mountain terrain. The breed developed from the Scottish hard-coated terriers, closely related to the Cairn Terrier and the Scottish Terrier. The white coat was a deliberately selected characteristic to distinguish the dog from the prey during hunting and to avoid accidents.
The most widespread legend about the origin of the white color attributes its selection to Colonel Edward Donald Malcolm of Poltalloch, who reportedly lost his dark Cairn Terrier by mistaking it for prey during a hunt in the 19th century. Following this accident, Malcolm is said to have decided to breed only white-coated puppies.
The West Highland White Terrier was officially recognized by the Kennel Club of the United Kingdom in 1907, and since then its popularity has continued to grow. Today it is one of the most recognizable breeds in the world, partly thanks to its use as an advertising mascot for international brands.
Characteristics and aptitudes
The Westie is a small but solid and robust dog, with a compact and well-proportioned body. Its head is round and large in relation to the body, with small erect ears and dark, lively eyes that give it an alert and curious expression. The coat is always an immaculate white, with a hard outer layer and a soft, dense undercoat.
In terms of temperament, the Westie is a cheerful, self-confident and extremely curious dog. It has great energy for its size and enjoys play and exploration. Although it is affectionate with its family, it is also independent and can be somewhat stubborn, typical terrier characteristics. Its hunting instinct makes it unpredictable with small animals.
The Westie is also a very vocal dog: it barks frequently in response to external stimuli, making it a good alarm guard dog. Its intelligence and its love of rewards make it receptive to positive training. It is ideal for active people who enjoy a dog with a lot of character.
Care
The care of the Westie's coat requires regular brushing two or three times a week to maintain its texture and avoid tangles. The white coat can stain easily, especially around the muzzle and paws, so a bath every three or four weeks may be necessary. Professional trimming every six or eight weeks helps maintain its characteristic silhouette.
The Westie needs moderate daily exercise: two walks of twenty to thirty minutes, combined with play sessions at home, are sufficient to keep it physically active. Scent games, interactive puzzles and obedience exercises are very beneficial in preventing boredom.
The diet should be of high quality and adapted to its tendency to food allergies. Some Westies are sensitive to wheat or corn, so it is advisable to opt for diets with limited ingredients and high digestibility. Weight control is important to prevent joint problems.
Most common diseases
Atopic dermatitis is one of the most common conditions in the West Highland White Terrier, manifesting with intense itching, redness and frequent secondary infections. This allergic tendency can be related to both environmental factors and food sensitivities, so identifying and eliminating the triggers is fundamental.
Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease is another common condition in the breed, especially in puppies. It consists of avascular necrosis of the femoral head that causes pain and lameness, and may require surgical treatment in the most severe cases. Respiratory problems, such as pulmonary fibrosis disease, can also appear in middle-aged or older specimens.
